We talked about primarily reference at this meeting. We underscored the importance of Samuel Greene's "Personal Relations between Librarians and Readers?" and RUSA's The Future of Reference Services Papers. In addition, the group went over the subject outline for reference under the LSC 553 link, with each person contributing what he or she knew about each subject. The topics for next week will be metadata, Library 2.0, information retrieval, Google vs. Opac, cataloging and user-created content. We hope to see you there.

Forum category: I found a great...! / Posts
Forum thread: June 12

We talked about a number of different topics, and tried to relate them all back to technology (especially since we're supposed to be able to carry a narrow focus through a number of different subject areas).

We compared and contrasted "As We May Think" by Vannevar Bush (June 1945, Atlantic Monthly) and Michael Gorman's "Web 2.0: The Sleep of Reason" and "Google in God's Mind". Gorman is a traditionalist who who thinks technology should be a tool of the librarian, and not fundamental to the profession, while Bush, who wrote his article within a decade of the military's first networked computers, really saw how technology could potentially be applied in the future to ease (and shift) the burdens of the information profession.

The role of information systems, and how it changed from mathematical calculations intended to save human labor to networking and communications (Web 2.0 emphasizes the communicative skills/tools such as podcasts, wikis, blogs, social taggings, mash-ups, and other methods of utilizing input from users).

open source v. proprietary software (the articles for this are from the June 2005 MIT Technology Review: Lessig and Epstein's dialogue "The People Own Ideas!" "The Creators Own Ideas" "Lessig's Rebuttal to Epstein")

"The user is not broken" - K. Schneider

Virtual libraries

"The World is Spiky" (Oct 2005, Atlantic Monthly)

We reviewed 555.

"What is a Library Anymore, Anyway" (available through First Monday)

We plan on talking about management, collection development, and related topics next time.

Forum category: I found a great...! / Posts
Forum thread: May 29 Meeting - Technology

Hi,

I don't know if I missed an e-mail or something, but I seemed to be the only person who arrived at the Info Commons last Thursday (5/22) to meet for a study session.
I read "Google and the myth of universal knowledge" by Jean-Noel Jeanney. He talks about how from a continental European perspective, they are being left out of Google's digitization project. Google is concentrating on English works, primarily because the partner libraries are U.S. and British. This also has implications for reference services, our next topic. If a searcher is only looking at what has been digitized by Google, the user gets a very American-centric selection. One of the tasks of a reference librarian is to be able to select items in other languages. That is why, according to Jeanney's book, the Eurpean Union is also trying to start a digitization project.

Forum category: I found a great...! / Posts
Forum thread: Technology

I read through this article, and the authors basically argue that the expectations of the modern world have changed greatly and these expectations affect the way in which libraries provide services. They thus advise that, in order to stay relevant in the digital age (where the Internet becomes increasingly more interactive and parcipatory), libraries must utilize the Web 2.0 applications in order to prove they are as relevant as other information providers. (i.e. Google) They describe the principles of Library 2.0 as 1) the library is everywhere; 2) the library is boundless; 3) the library invites participation; and 4) the library uses flexible technology systems.

Forum category: I found a great...! / Posts
Forum thread: Technology

I read “Library 2.0” by Michael E. Casey and Laura C. Sauastinuk. It is also listed in the study group section under technology.

Much of this I have seen before but it was a good refresher. It states that Library 2.0 relies on asking users for input, constantly evaluating the existing library routines and trying to reach library users, as well as nonusers.

The user is asked to participate in creating and evaluating library services. The user should be able to pick services to fit their unique needs.

It stresses that it is important to make sure that user privacy is protected.

Forum category: I found a great...! / Posts
Forum thread: Technology

I read “The Embedded Librarian” by Karen M. Ramsay and Jim Kinnie today, which is listed in the wiki study group section under technology. It is a short article about the librarians at the University of Rhode Island, who are making an effort to bring the library to students. They are focused on outreach.

It was a short article about librarians becoming a part of online classes. The professors add them to WebCT as student assistants and they join in discussions offering resources to find information and help with research projects.

They also offer an elective class in the general education program, called LIB 120 Intro to Information Literacy. It is very popular and is now being offered online too. I would have liked that when I was in college!

Forum category: I found a great...! / Posts
Forum thread: Technology

My name is Jennifer Porter. I am on the school media track, hoping to work in an elementary school next year. I started the program part time while I was working full time in DC. I was in property management before I came to the library world. This summer my husband's job brought us to Charlottesville. So, I went full time in the fall to get finished. It was no fun driving back and forth but it was only for a semester. This semester I'm doing practicum and 2 partially online classes.

Jennifer

ude.auc|retroP25#ude.auc|retroP25

Forum category: I found a great...! / Posts
Forum thread: General discussion
